We are very excited about this assignment because we are essentially returning to a country, people, and culture that we love. We will serve in West Timor, which is called Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). We will live in the city of Kupang. Eve will serve as a literacy specialist in Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) in partnership with the local church, focusing on training teachers. I will serve as the partnership coordinator and facilitator in conjunction with Eve’s literacy outreach, workshops, and other training events. The ultimate goal is to teach mother tongue speakers to read God’s Word in their mother tongue language.” Papua New Guinea, Indonesia is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world; 848 languages are listed for the country, of which 12 have no known living speakers. Most of the population of over 7 million people live in customary communities, which are as diverse as the languages. The country is one of the worlds least explored, culturally and geographically. Papua New Guinea’s mining and resource sector led to the country becoming the sixth fastest-growing economy in the world in 2011. Nearly 40 percent of the population lives a self-sustainable natural lifestyle with no access to global capital.
